As someone who works internationally, I am often faced with real unpleasant situations. Some people want things from me, others just want to make a point. Human life just doesn't hold the same value in other parts of the world as it does here in Canada, and I need to be one step ahead in order to protect myself and others. I started training in Martial Arts at a very early age, Traditional Jiu Jitsu, Karate,Wing Chun and even hand to hand combat training in the military. All of these arts are effective in their own rights, and gave me the confidence of survival in most situations, but I have certainly noticed over the years that 95% of all altercations end up struggling on the ground in one way or another. I needed something that would give me the same confidence on the ground as I have standing up against an attacker.
This is where BJJ comes into play.
Though the years of training in self defense around the world, one idea holds true... "the further from the source you get, the muddier the water"
Shane Rice is a direct link to the Gracie Family. A Black Belt under Rickson Gracie. The only way to get closer to the "real deal" is to be born a Gracie!
I started my training with Professor Shane Rice and Victory Jiu Jitsu in Nov 2015. Since then I have tried to take advantage of every single class and open mat he has to offer; learning as much as I can through drilling, watching and applying what we have learned through daily sparring. The atmosphere and friendships I have made at the school are top notch. Everyone at every level is there to help us improve as a whole..
As an added bonus, I have lost nearly 40lbs in the 10 months of training and feel boosted in energy, endurance and confidence.
I will be 42yrs old this year feeling better then I have in years... and I am definitely looking forward to the next 40 years of jiu jitsu and one day, receiving my Black Belt under Professor Rice
Before joining Victory Jiu-Jitsu Academy, I had fears of injury and of being too old (38 years) to participate in a martial art with “live” drills or sparing. After sustaining a whiplash in another traditional martial art where partners were more “compliant” when training techniques, I simply made the decision that I would no longer let the fear of injury and neck pain hold me back from pursuing my dream. The training methods and intensity at the Academy actually helped me make a much faster and complete recovery within three months. I attribute this to an increase in blood flow, in strength, and in mobility.
I specifically joined Victory Jiu-Jitsu Academy because I wanted to learn authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with an emphasis on effectiveness in self-defense. I had done my research and I was very impressed with Professor Shane Rice having been a world class competitor that had earned his black belt directly from Master Rickson Gracie. After watching a few classes, I knew that I had found the right people to train with.
At the Academy, I feel like I am learning the martial art from the best technical source – directly from Master Rickson Gracie’s teachings. Professor Shane Rice and the instructors do not just teach techniques separately one after the other, but in systems/concepts where they are linked together and practiced in the most effective ways. Being a smaller person, I was also very impressed with how well the techniques that were taught could work effectively on larger and stronger opponents.
I appreciate that the approach to training at the Academy is to combine intensity/realism with practices that are intended to provide longevity in the martial art. Given that I was nearing my 40’s, I was attracted by the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu philosophy that the art is intended to increase your quality of life, and that you should continue to train Jiu-Jitsu and be healthy your entire life.
Training at Victory Jiu-Jitsu Academy has changed my body – I have gained considerable muscle mass, find it much easier to maintain a lean body, and my cardio-vascular system has greatly improved. It has also changed my mind. I have gained an increased desire to maintain a very healthy diet/lifestyle. I find that “things” matter even less now than they did before. I have also made many friendships, and I consider my training partners at the Academy to be my second family.
There is a lot of respect and discipline between students at Victory Jiu-Jitsu Academy. There is no ego at this gym. Everyone is eager to help others, and realize that when we help a training partner improve – it raises the bar for everyone else, and everyone improves faster.
Much like wrestling, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a very high intensity workout that constantly engages all of your core muscles. You will push yourself harder than you thought you could, and you will achieve more in martial arts than you though was possible for you. There is a strong intellectual/strategic component to this art, which I find enjoyable.
I enter and leave the gym with peace of mind, and not thinking about work or any other outside stress factors while I train. I simply no longer see my life without training at the Academy, because it is now a grounding force in my life.
I definitely believe that training with Professor Shane Rice is for anybody regardless of age, sex, or physical ability. If you have an interest in improving your life, you will definitely grow as a person and as a martial artist even if you only train at Victory Jiu-Jitsu 2-3 times a week. I would strongly encourage anyone to try a few classes.
Do not let your fears hold you back from discovering the benefits of training at Victory Jiu-Jitsu. I look forward to a longer, healthier life with less injury, and hope to one day train regularly at the Academy with my children and grand-children. A quote that pushed me to make the switch to Victory Jiu-Jitsu Academy is: “the injuries of the body cannot be compared to the injuries of the soul”. Someday, you will be happy that you pushed your own limits and did not take the easiest path.
